Drums, IBCs & containers

Drums, totes & container management

Empty containers accumulate quietly, take up yard space and carry whatever is left inside them. Handled as a program rather than as individual pickups, most of them cycle back into service instead of becoming waste.

Where it can go

Evaluated in order,
best outlet first

Each route below is assessed and ruled out before the next is considered. Disposal is what remains after that, not where the conversation starts.

01

Reconditioning and reuse

Steel drums and IBC totes cleaned, tested and returned to service. Reuse beats recycling for containers, because the container keeps its form and its value.

02

Exchange programs

Empty containers collected on the same visit that delivers replacements, so the cycle runs without a separate pickup.

03

Material recycling

Containers beyond reconditioning shredded for steel or plastic recovery.

04

Residual management

Heels and residues removed and handled under the correct profile before the container moves.

05

Last resort

Disposal for containers that can be neither reconditioned nor recycled, with the reason recorded.

What KODA handles

Coordinated end to end

The outlet is chosen on the material's merits, not on what is convenient. Every option is weighed against what the stream actually is, what it is worth and what documentation it has to produce — and the reasoning is shown to you, not summarized.

  • Container inventory and accumulation review
  • Reconditioner and recycler placement by container type
  • Exchange scheduling tied to your delivery cycle
  • Residual profiling and compliant handling of heels
  • Movement records and recycling documentation

Common in

Who generates this stream

Chemical processing, manufacturing, food and beverage, coatings and adhesives, agriculture and distribution.

One stream is a complete engagementThis can be handled on its own, at one site, with no requirement to move anything else to KODA. It can also run as part of a full portfolio. The scope is yours to set and can change in either direction.

Questions

Drums, totes & container management, in practice

What counts as an empty container?

Regulations define it specifically, and the definition differs for acute hazardous waste. Containers that do not meet it are handled under the residual profile rather than as empties, which is a determination made before anything moves.

Do you handle IBC totes as well as steel drums?

Yes, along with poly drums and other container types. Each has a different reconditioning and recycling route.

Can this run alongside our existing chemical supplier?

Yes. Container management is often the only stream KODA handles at a site, and it does not require changing who supplies you.

Start with the material,
not the invoice

Every engagement begins with a KODA Operational Review™ — a structured evaluation of your facility, materials, vendors and compliance requirements. Recommendations come from that data.
